Effective communication is arguably an essential skill in any profession, and as an electrician your ability to speak clearly and confidently with a diverse range of clients, workmates and stakeholders is essential. On any day you may be required to give or receive instructions from people from all walks of life including homeowners, builders, architects, project managers and industry professionals to name a few. When you can interact with all of these groups with ease, you’ll be clear on expectations which plays a vital role in getting the job done right, first time. You’ll also build rapport with those you work with and work for, which is a key factor in growing your reputation and business.
In your work as an electrician, there will be times when you’ll be required to work alone, as part of a close-knit small team, or on a large-scale project with many stakeholders and key deliverables. This will depend on the job at hand; for example, you may be left to complete small residential or commercial jobs independently, and being self-motivated and responsible at these times is paramount. Other times, you may be working with two or three others on a mid-size install or maintenance job, where supporting each other to get the job done efficiently and effectively is key. You may also have the opportunity to be part of a large-scale team working on a long-term commercial or civil project. With so many tradies and managers working together on the one site, effective communication, collaboration and an adaptable approach will be key factors in successfully playing your role.
Problem-solving is right up there with the most important skills an electrician needs, so putting time into developing your ability to analyse and solve issues is a must. The ability to troubleshoot both simple and complex technical issues on site will set you apart, not to mention save you time and headaches. From straightforward questions like which cable to run where, to more challenging situations that require decisions on wiring and programming, your problem-solving skills will certainly get a workout!
Like many trades, a good grasp on maths is a must, as you’ll be measuring and calculating various items regularly, and accuracy is vitally important to avoid wasting time, money and risking safety. You’ll be measuring wiring, currents and volts, frequently as well as making calculations on spacing for installation requirements. You’ll also need solid English skills, as the ability to read and interpret safety information, switchboards, drawings and other plans and guidelines will allow you to complete tasks accurately and safely.
As a licenced trade, electricians are bound by regulations, and you must adhere to these at all times to ensure safety and compliance. Being aware of the existing regulations is a must, but you’ll also need to stay informed on any changes that occur. This really is vital and is something you should be proactive and self-driven about at all stages of your career.
During your apprenticeship, much time and effort goes into learning the technical knowledge that is essential to passing your LEA and becoming a certified sparky. This is undoubtedly essential, but be sure to put some focus on the key life skills needed to succeed too. Because it’s the electricians that are not only skilled, but are also well-equipped to adapt to the daily challenges that stand out from the pack and really excel in their electrical career.
