That’s where the NECA Pre-Selection assessment helps you and your potential employer. The assessment covers both numeracy and literacy and includes:
- Transpositions of formula (Ohm’s law)
- Basic arithmetic (decimals, fractions, percentages in addition to the basics)
- Pythagoras
- English reading and comprehension
- Mechanical reasoning
If you would like to prepare for the test, study the above and use the sample test questions to see how you’re going.

The NECA Pre-Selection assessment is highly regarded by employers in the industry as it provides an assessment from an electrical standpoint. A successful result in the assessment will enhance your entry prospects into an electrical apprenticeship.
Once you successfully undertake the assessment you can provide potential employers with evidence that you have the language, literacy and numeracy skills to successfully complete an electrical apprenticeship, particularly the off-the-job or TAFE component of the apprenticeship.
For more than 30 years the National Electrical and Communication Association (NECA) on behalf of the electrical contracting industry, has been conducting a pre-selection assessment for students interested in an electrical career.
The results of the Pre-Selection are circulated to prospective employers (provided of course that you have given approval for this on the NECA Education & Careers privacy/consent form).
These prospective employers will make contact directly with those candidates they wish to interview.
There are no guarantees that you will be invited to an interview, however, it is the best means to get your personal details in front of many hiring companies in one hit.
