Get communication-job ready

We’re offering hands-on training that teaches you how to install, splice, test and certify optical fibre cabling systems to industry standards.

Course content includes:

  • Optical fibre theory and light propagation
  • Cable preparation and termination techniques
  • Fusion and mechanical splicing
  • OTDR, LSPM and fault-finding tests
  • Documentation and certification
  • Laser safety and hazard management

All customer cabling work in the telecommunications, fire, security, and data industries must be performed by a cabler who is registered with an ACMA-accredited registrar.

Course information

This short course is a specialised unit that covers the competencies required to work on customer premises for optical fibre cabling communications applications.

In this course you will learn how to:

  • Prepare and handle optical fibre cables.
  • How to install, secure and terminate optical fibre cable.
  • Various termination techniques.
  • Test optical fibre circuits for continuity and loss.
  • Identify and resolve issues with fibre optic connections.
  • Understand safety procedures and environmental requirements, and
  • Record test results.

Communications applications include digital and analog, telephony, data, video, digital broadcasting, computer networks, local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs) and multimedia.

Course description

This course is delivered by an experienced qualified trainer with industry experience, combining theory with practical training.

The format is highly interactive, with plenty of time for hands-on practice using professional equipment.

  • Day 1 builds a solid foundation of knowledge.
  • Day 2 applies the learned knowledge through practical assessments.

This course is applicable for:

  • Skilled electrical workers seeking optical fibre ACMA endorsements.
  • Skilled telecommunications workers seeking optical fibre ACMA endorsements.
  • Electrical apprentices who have completed relevant units to apply for an open cabling registration and seeking optical fibre ACMA endorsements.
  • Telecommunication trainees seeking optical fibre ACMA endorsements.

Course details

Any technical staff who place, secure and terminate optical fibre cable in new installations and upgrades or maintain existing networks in domestic, commercial and industrial installations need the required knowledge and to install, test and terminate optical fibre cable on customer premises for communications applications using a range of terminations that may include direct termination, fusion splicing and mechanical splicing.

  1. Meet licensing requirements – This course satisfies ACMA open cabling registration requirements for optical fibre work.
  2. Get hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment and techniques.
  3. Apply what you learn to real-world cabling projects, and have industry-ready skills
  4. Receive professional recognition – a Statement of Attainment is provided at the completion of this course for ICTCBL322.
  5. Future-proof your career – Fibre optic technology is the backbone of modern telecommunications.
  6. Gain critical skills for NBN, carrier networks and commercial installations.
  7. Give yourself options – grow your business and expand into telecommunications.
  8. Learn to work safely with laser systems and optical equipment.

There are no prerequisites specified for this unit; however, applicants typically undertake it to apply for their ACMA Optical Fibre endorsement.

All students entering the program are current and experienced electricians or apprentices who have already completed fundamental learning in the dangers of working with live electricity.

An LLN Assessment will be offered to applicants during their pre-training review.  For anyone who has completed a Certificate III Electrotechnology, or Certificate III Telecommunications, it is not mandatory to complete an LLN Assessment, as previously completed training demonstrates they have the skills to the level required for a successful training outcome.

RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) is not offered for this course.

Resources provided

  • Learner Companion Guide (LCG) including session plans, activities and assessments
  • Classroom Assessment Workbook (CAW)
  • All consumables and test equipment

Students should bring:

  • PPE (safety glasses, and wear enclosed footwear and long sleeves)
  • Pen, calculator and notebook

Refer to the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy.

Completing ICTCBL322 supports further professional development and can be combined with:

  • ICTCBL301 (structured cabling)
  • ICTCBL303 (coaxial cabling)

Plus advanced Fibre and Telecommunications courses.

Participants will gain practical knowledge and skills to:

  • Understand optical fibre theory and light propagation
  • Prepare, install and terminate optical fibre cables
  • Perform fusion splicing and mechanical splicing
  • Patch, test and certify SMF and MMF installations
  • Use OTDR and LSPM equipment for fault finding and compliance testing
  • Follow ACMA Cabling Provider Rules and AS/CA S008 & S009 wiring standards
  • Identify and control optical fibre safety hazards (laser, chemical, confined space)

Core topics covered

Day 1: Theory & demonstration (6 hrs theory + 1.5 hr knowledge assessment)

  • Optical fibre fundamentals
  • Cable types, connectors, splicing theory
  • Standards, compliance and safety

Day 2: Practical (8.5 hrs practical + assessment)

  • Cable installation and termination
  • Fusion and mechanical splicing
  • OTDR, LSPM testing and certification
  • Completion of practical assessment tasks

You receive your optical fibre endorsement by contacting an ACMA accredited registrar after completion of the required optical fibre cabling endorsement training. Once you have proof of course completion, the registrar will add the endorsement to your existing cabling registration.
