In response to the changing needs of the renewable energy sector, the training packages used for upskilling renewable energy workers have been updated, and we have responded to this by releasing our new Design and install grid-connected battery storage systems course.

This course covers the design and practical application of installing battery storage equipment to power conversion equipment (PCE) including the different types of battery storage equipment and PCE and the compliance standards when connecting a battery storage system to the grid.

This is a blended learning course allowing you to learn at your own pace, before attending face-to-face sessions to complete your assessments plus any outstanding work, and to have the information needed for accreditation.

This course builds on the knowledge from the Design & Install grid-connected photovoltaic systems course, so a prerequisite for enrolment is a Statement of Attainment in the following Unit of Competency: UEERE0061 – Design grid-connected photovoltaic power supply systems

Completing a course to Design and install grid-connected battery storage systems will allow you to offer more electrical services and can increase your future employment opportunities.

This course combines online self-paced learning and face-to-face practical training, to be completed in 3 months from enrolment.

This course covers competencies fulfilling the requirements of Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) for electricians seeking accreditation in the design and installation of grid-connected battery storage systems. It includes the following units

  • UEERE0054 Conduct site survey for grid-connected photovoltaic and battery storage systems
  • UEERE0060 Design grid-connected battery storage systems 
  • UEERE0077 Install battery storage equipment power conversion equipment to grid
  • UEERE0078 Install battery storage to power conversion equipment

Course details

To enrol in this course, you must be an A Grade licenced electrician. 

This course builds on the knowledge from the Design & install grid-connected photovoltaic systems course, so a prerequisite for enrolment is a Statement of Attainment in the following Unit of Competency:

  • UEERE0061 – Design grid-connected photovoltaic power supply systems

and/or

Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation:

  • Grid-connected photovoltaic systems (GCPV) design and install

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to apply to Solar Accreditation Australia.

Successful completion of this course provides you with the knowledge and skills required to apply for SAA accreditation and the ability to demonstrate the:

  • Knowledge & skills to safely survey a site and create a site survey document.
  • Knowledge & skills to design a compliant & high-performance oriented battery & PCE power supply system.
  • Ability to install, then test & commission a Battery & PCE generation system compliantly.
  • Knowledge & skills to find solutions to operate, maintain and fault-find Battery energy apparatus and systems.

Students who successfully complete all assessments of this course will receive a Statement of attainment for the following units of competency, meeting the training component of Solar Accreditation Australia’s for GCBS Design & Installation:

  • UEERE0054 Conduct site survey for grid-connected photovoltaic and battery storage systems.
  • UEERE0060 Design grid-connected battery storage systems.
  • UEERE0077 Install battery storage to power conversion equipment.
  • UEERE0078 Install battery storage equipment power conversion equipment to grid

 

Students may apply for Credit Transfer (CT) or RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) in accordance with the NECA Education & Careers Recognition of CT or RPL Policy.

This course combines online self-paced learning and in-person practical training.

  • The online section includes learning theory, tasks and assessments. This is done through the NECA E&C learning management system (LMS) and is supported by evening classes online, facilitated by the course teacher.
  • Once the online component is completed, the in-person training will be scheduled and delivered across three days. This includes a half day for finalisation of any incomplete online theory assessments, and two and a half days to complete practical installation assessments under teacher observation.

If needed, students have up to 3 months to complete online learning and assessments. An extension can be requested. 

 

 

We recommend obtaining current copies of the following Australian Standards, which are available for purchase from NECA Education & Careers, or the Intertek Inform website, and are also available from some libraries, institutions, and industry associations:

  • AS/NZS 3000:2025 – Electrical installations (known as the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules)
  • AS/NZS 4777.1:2024 – Grid connection of energy systems via inverters
  • AS/NZS 5139:2019 (Inc Amd 1:2025) – Electrical installations – Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment

Students will also require the following:

  • A laptop with internet connection
  • A scientific calculator
  • An email account (which we encourage you to check regularly)

For the 3-day in-person training, students will need to bring their own PPE, including:

  • Steel-capped boots
  • Eye protection
  • Gloves

 

Our trainer, Robbie Nichols, a respected renewables specialist, shares the benefits of his years of solar and storage experience with you during the blended learning course.

Robbie has over 25 years of hands-on experience working with clients throughout regional Victoria, and decided to complete qualifications as a trainer with NECA Education & Careers in 2024 to deliver our solar and storage courses.

 

The course has been developed to ensure accreditation requirements are met which includes:.

  • SAA (Solar Accreditation Australia) provide accreditation requirements on their website
  • Legislation, regulations, relevant industry standards and codes of practice for electrical work including specific work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation and regulatory requirements 
  • AS/NZS 3000:2018 Wiring Rules 
  • Legislation, regulations, relevant industry standards and codes of practice for renewable energy 
  • AS/NZS 4777.1:2024, Grid connection of energy systems via inverters, Part 1: Installation requirements  
  • AS/NZS 5139:2019 Electrical installations – safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment 

The Clean Energy Regulator (CER) recently made significant changes to the accreditation process, impacting all Solar and Battery Installers and Designers.

Any individual who wishes to design or install Grid Connected PV systems (GCPV) or Grid Connected Battery Systems (GCBS), must now be accredited under the SAA Scheme to be eligible for small-scale technology certificates (STCs).

In addition, many state-based rebate or subsidy programs require the installer to be an SAA accredited installer.
