Starting a career is a bold move – and our Traineeship Team is here to make sure it’s a successful one. From personalised mentoring to energising events like our trainee morning tea, we’re committed to helping trainees build momentum from the very start.
Recently, NECA E&C trainees gathered at the City of Melbourne Bowls Club for a morning of networking, skill-building, and reflection. Nestled beside the peaceful Flagstaff Gardens, the venue offered a refreshing change of pace: perfect for stepping back and focusing on career development.
While trainees gain valuable experience within their host organisations, they’re often the only trainee in their team – or even the entire business. That’s why events like the morning tea are so important. They create space for trainees to connect with peers, share insights, swap stories, and build networks that support their growth.
Anthony: Growing in IT
Anthony’s traineeship began with ordering IT equipment for a hospital. Today, he manages devices and leads projects. Inspired by his dad’s advice to avoid HECS debt, Anthony has developed strong time management, organisation, and communication skills.
‘It gave me a way to dip my toes in the water. I found that I liked it a lot more, and then I just got going from there, and it’s been great ever since.’
Shanae: Building professionalism and purpose
Following in her sister’s footsteps, Shanae eagerly embraced her business traineeship. She has learned to work with greater professionalism. She values the support of her Industry Careers Consultant, Adisa, as well as the mental health resources available through Carfi, NECA E&C’s Employee Assistance Program.
‘You are putting yourself out there, getting into the workforce, and they are so supportive and so helpful.’
Ethan: Finding confidence and direction
After deciding university wasn’t the right fit, Ethan turned to a traineeship and hasn’t looked back. He has gained confidence, overcome his nervousness, and now thrives in his government department placement.
‘The traineeship has definitely helped me gain my confidence in talking to people and taught me to overcome nervousness.’
Ethan is now supervised by Jason, a former NECA E&C trainee who completed Certificates III and IV in Business and secured an ongoing role in the same department. Jason returned to the morning tea to share his journey and inspire the next generation.
The morning tea was more than just a social gathering; it was a snapshot of the comprehensive support NECA E&C provides. Between coffee and conversation, trainees heard from team members on how to maximise their experience:
Interactive activities also provided trainees with the opportunity to sharpen their communication and teamwork skills.
‘It was a successful event. We all really enjoyed spending the morning with our trainees,’ said Industry Careers Consultant, Adisa.
