Electrical work demands skill, precision and a strong focus on safety. Whether you’re installing systems, maintaining infrastructure or working on construction sites, the environments electricians operate in can present real risks.

That’s why first aid training is a critical skill for anyone working in the electrical industry.

From responding to electrical shock incidents to supporting colleagues during medical emergencies or mental health crises, being prepared can make a life-saving difference.

At NECA Education & Careers, first aid training is designed specifically with the electrical industry in mind. Our courses combine practical training, nationally recognised qualifications and real-world scenarios, so participants leave confident and capable of responding when it matters most.

NECA offers a range of first aid courses including:

    • Provide First Aid + CPR and Low Voltage Rescue
    • CPR and Low Voltage Rescue refresher training
    • Mental Health First Aid

Together, these courses help electrical workers maintain compliance, strengthen workplace safety, and develop the skills needed to support colleagues in critical situations.

Why first aid training is essential in the electrical industry

Electrical work involves unique hazards. Electric shock, burns, falls and other workplace injuries can occur quickly and without warning.

In many cases, the first few minutes after an incident are the most critical.

Having trained workers on site who can respond immediately can:

    • Reduce the severity of injuries
    • Improve survival rates during cardiac emergencies
    • Ensure safe rescue procedures around electrical hazards
    • Support a stronger safety culture on site
    • Provide early support during mental health crises

Electrical safety regulations and workplace expectations also require workers to maintain certain competencies, particularly CPR and Low Voltage Rescue (LVR) training.

By keeping these skills up to date, electricians not only remain compliant but also contribute to a safer work environment for their team.

    NECA First Aid Courses

NECA Education & Careers offers several specialised first aid training courses that equip electrical workers with the skills to respond effectively to both physical and mental health emergencies.

First Aid, CPR and Low Voltage Rescue

The course includes the following nationally recognised units of competency:

    • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
    • HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
    • UETDRMP018 – Perform rescue from a live low voltage panel

The accredited training course provides comprehensive emergency response training tailored for electrical workplaces over two days.

It equips participants with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to manage medical emergencies and electrical incidents safely.

    Participants learn how to:

    • Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines
    • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
    • Provide first aid for injuries including burns, bleeding and shock
    • Safely perform low voltage rescue from live electrical panels
    • Assess risks and respond appropriately during electrical incidents

Through hands-on simulations and practical exercises, participants develop the confidence required to respond effectively in emergency situations.

    CPR and Low Voltage Rescue

Electrical workers must regularly refresh their CPR and Low Voltage Rescue competencies to maintain safety compliance and ensure skills remain current.

The CPR and Low Voltage Rescue refresher course focuses on the two critical competencies required for many electrical roles:

    • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
    • UETDRMP018 Perform rescue from a live low voltage panel

    Participants refresh their ability to:

    • Perform effective CPR
    • Use defibrillators (AEDs)
    • Conduct safe rescue procedures from live electrical equipment
    • Respond appropriately to electrical shock incidents

Regular refresher training is essential because emergency response skills can decline over time without practice. Updating CPR and LVR certification ensures electrical workers remain prepared to respond quickly if a colleague experiences an electric shock or cardiac arrest.

    Mental Health First Aid

While physical safety is critical on job sites, mental health is an essential part of workplace wellbeing.

The electrical and construction industries can involve long hours, demanding schedules, and high-pressure environments. Mental health challenges are not uncommon across the sector.

The non-accredited Mental Health First Aid course equips participants with the skills to recognise early signs of mental health challenges and provide initial support to someone experiencing distress.

    Participants learn how to:

    • Recognise signs of anxiety, depression and other mental health concerns
    • Approach and support someone who may be struggling
    • Respond to mental health crises
    • Encourage professional help and appropriate support services

Mental Health First Aid does not teach people to become therapists. Instead, it provides practical tools to offer support until professional help becomes available.

By building awareness and confidence, workplaces can create stronger cultures of support and wellbeing.
