COVID-19 is both a public health and an economic crisis.
We are all aware of the measures that the government has introduced so far with respect to social distancing. The requirements with respect to personal hygiene and self-isolation have also been highly publicised. The Australian Government has released a new Coronavirus (COVID-19) app, which can be downloaded from the Apple app store or Google Play store. We urge all apprentices to download this app, as it contains very important and comprehensive advice and updates.
The measures that the government has taken, in particular social distancing, are designed to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the community. Most NECA Education & Careers apprentices are young and there may be a tendency among some young people to think that COVID-19 will not have a major impact on their health. Young people do get the virus and some of them get very sick indeed. Moreover, think of your parents, your grandparents and other people in your circle for whom the health impacts are likely to be much more dramatic.
As mentioned, COVID-19 has also created an economic crisis. Whole industries have been shut down and hundreds of thousands of people have lost their jobs. At present, the construction industry continues to operate and all parties within the industry are doing everything possible to ensure that it can continue to operate. However, do not take this for granted.
All of our apprentices are required to practice the social distancing requirements specified by the government and those social distancing measures that have been implemented by their host employer or that are in force on the site that you are working on.
I can’t stress how critical it is that all apprentices and construction workers do this. If the number of COVID-19 infections continues to increase, or there is increasing spread within the construction industry, then it is almost certain that the industry will be closed down. The economic and social pain that would result would be immense. The stand down or termination of huge numbers of employees would result, and it would take the industry a long time to recover. Many jobs, including apprenticeships, would be lost, with no guarantee that those jobs and apprenticeships will be there when this is over.
It is absolutely critical that we modify our behaviour, and all do our bit. In particular practice the hygiene and social distancing requirements of the government, host employers, and specific sites.
