Are you a recent school leaver ready to find a rewarding career? Or are you currently in the workforce, but looking for a new role that’s a better fit?
If you want to build a strong foundation and dive straight into your new career, an apprenticeship is a great choice. You can achieve a nationally recognised qualification in around four years, learning (and getting paid) on the job as you go. But how do you know if an apprenticeship is the right option for you?
Once you’ve discovered if your career of
choice offers an apprenticeship, it’s important to consider your learning style
and personality traits to work out if this pathway is a good match. So, to help
you make the right call, in this article we share three key questions you can
ask to discover if an apprenticeship is the way to go.
1. Do you prefer to learn through practical experience or theory?
We all have a preferred learning style, and while there are a range of models used to describe these, a commonly accepted version is that we lean towards one of the following:
- Visual: learn by seeing and looking
- Auditory: learn by hearing and listening
- Kinesthetic: learn by touching and doing.
Visual and auditory learners are generally
more comfortable in a classroom environment, while kinesthetic learners often
prefer to gain their skills and knowledge performing hands-on tasks. Of course,
it’s always possible to adapt, but if you see yourself as someone who likes to
learn by doing, an apprenticeship will likely suit you.
2. Are you a creature of habit or do you like to mix it up?
Some people enjoy the routine of a getting up at the same time in the morning, eating the same breakfast cereal and travelling to the same workplace day in, day out – while others find a regular routine repetitive and maybe even a little boring.
If meeting new people and seeing new places inspires you to get up and go, gaining your skills working as an apprentice may be a better fit than the structured routines and classrooms of university. For example, as an electrical apprentice, you may travel to a different worksite on a daily basis, or even multiple sites in a day. You’ll also be tackling real-life work situations – from maintaining and installing new equipment to troubleshooting and fault-finding on electrical circuits – which is sure to keep things interesting.
3. Do you like the idea of getting paid to learn?
While a university degree can certainly provide you with the skills you need to embark on a financially rewarding career, before you reap the benefits there is usually a few tough years of juggling part-time work with study so you can pay the bills. Not to mention the hefty debt that most students are faced with paying off over a long period of time once the course is complete.
In contrast, an apprenticeship allows you to work and earn money as you learn. The minimum wage generally increases each year as you progress through your training, and once you’re qualified and have a few years of experience under your belt, there is the potential to earn a great income. And in most cases, you won’t need to give up your nights or weekends working a part-time job to make ends meet.
