Sam Coles – Industry Careers Consultant

Enjoying some family time!

Sam came to NECA Education & Careers in 2016 following a return to Hobart. He began his career with a group training electrical apprenticeship, spending his first year working in a fast paced domestic environment. For the remaining years of his apprenticeship Sam was placed with Hydro Tasmania, working remotely on large scale hydro generators, turbines and switchyard assets. Following the apprenticeship, Sam stayed on before travelling all around Australia with his now wife, working in mining towns for 7 years and then 4 years of fly in fly out work in Hobart while his kids were young.

During that time, Sam’s roles included Leading Hand, Supervisor, Superintendent, Project Manager and Shift Electrician across the mining, power generation, oil & gas and paper industries. He also looked after teams and was proactive in training apprentices on site and mentoring them if they were struggling at trade school.

Sam’s varied history makes him well suited to the many functions of his role as Industry Careers Consultant. Sam enjoys working for NECA Education & Careers because it allows him to give back to the industry that he is passionate about and that has given him so many opportunities for nearly 20 years. It also means he can keep up to date with new electrical technology.

When he’s not working, Sam enjoys keeping busy and there’s always a lot going on: time with family, charity events, gardening, and sports, including umpiring, and coaching the school soccer team.

Sam is passionate about the electrical and communications industry and loves being able to employ new apprentices and promote NECA Education & Careers to potential new hosts.

Sam’s why is having a unique opportunity to help shape a high standard of future tradespeople.

“Every work day is different and offers new challenges that you can’t plan for which means there is never a dull moment.” Sam Coles
