    Differences between an electrical apprentice and a trainee

    An apprentice

    An apprentice is someone who is training to become a licensed tradesperson – like a qualified electrical practitioner.

    The pathway to become a qualified electrical practitioner:

    • Undertake the 4-year apprenticeship program (typically)
    • Achieve the nationally recognised trade qualification
    • Complete experience through on-the-job training with off-the-job study (usually a Certificate III in Electrotechnology)
    • Learn through being supervised by a licensed electrician
    • At the end of the apprenticeship, apply for their electrical practitioner licence
    A trainee

    A trainee is someone learning skills in a particular non-trade role – often in a support role or in a more specialised area that doesn’t require full trade certification.

    This is often a stepping stone, or a way to gain industry experience without becoming a fully licenced electrician. It includes:

    • Shorter programs (often 1–2 years)
    • Leads to a Certificate II or III in a specific area (eg data and voice, renewable energy systems or business – if they’re doing admin in an electrical company)
    • More common in pre-apprenticeship, entry-level or admin/specialised roles
    • Doesn’t lead to a trade licence
