NECA Electro-start is a special-intake program, subsidised by the electrical industry, for the most enthusiastic and bright future electricians to start their careers.
If you’re keen to get into an electrical apprenticeship, we invite you to register for the NECA Electro-start program. In this course, you will study Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) UEE22020, as well as gain credits for further training as an apprentice or trainee in the electrotechnology industry. You will also have the opportunity to secure an electrical apprenticeship with NECA.
Through this course, you can gain experience in the trade and use your skills to make informed choices in your selection of career paths.
Course description
The UEE22020 Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start)) will prepare you for an apprenticeship in the electrotechnology industry and gives you the basic skills to make you job-ready. The course will enable you to develop broad-based competencies in a range of electrotechnology fields, such as:
- lighting,
- general power,
- fire protection and security,
- instrumentation,
- optical data and voice systems,
- electrical motors and control systems.
Electrical theory, mathematics and general practical skills are taught in the course, along with how to interpret electrical drawings. You will gain a good appreciation of the basic tools and equipment an electrician uses on the job.

Plus, when you complete the pre-app course, what you’ve studied is ‘recognised prior learning’ for the UEE30820 Certificate III Electrotechnology Electrician course. This effectively reduces the number of units of study for the Cert III, which means more on-the-job apprenticeship experience. It’s a win-win.

Course dates and learning approaches
The NECA Electro-start pre-apprenticeship course will teach you the basic theory, with practical skills training taking place in our simulated practical workshop area on campus.
Electrical safety plays a major part in the course too, so for the work simulations carried out on campus in the workshop, you will require work-wear, work boots and clear safety glasses.
At NECA we use an online learning platform – Sparky LMS – and operate a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) approach to learning. We expect you to have a laptop and the necessary computer skills needed to comfortably participate in the course.
This in-person course has intakes at varying times of the year and you can apply at any time. The intake date indicates the start date of the course. Due to the high demand for this course, we cannot guarantee entry.
Course details
In this course we cover the following units of study:
- UEECD0007 Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
- UEECD0038 Provide solutions and report on routine electrotechnology problems
- UEECD0046 Solve problems in single-path circuits
- UEECD0051 Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications
- UEECD0020 Fix and secure electrotechnology equipment
- UEECD0019 Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utility industry components
- UEECD0021 Identify and select components, accessories and materials for energy sector work activities
- UEECD0008 Carry out preparatory energy sector work activities
- UEERE0021 Provide basic sustainable energy solutions for energy management in residential premises
- UEECD0052 Use of routine equipment plant technologies in an energy sector environment
- CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
- UEECD0009 Carry out routine work activities in an energy sector environment
To be eligible, students must be at least 16 years of age.
While there are no specific entry requirements for this qualification, you will need to be comfortable with Year 10 level English and Mathematics. Having achieved Year 11 Maths and English is highly recommended. This course is not recommended if you find mathematics at this level challenging.
To determine suitability for this course each eligible applicant will participate in a mandatory four-hour pre-training review that includes a maths aptitude test and a literacy assessment. The in-person PTR will be held at our Carlton North campus.
Dates for the PTR sessions will be advised after we have received and reviewed your application.

– You’ve completed Year 12 of school, or are just about to;
– You have the right to live and study in Australia (eligibility requirement for an Australian Electrical Apprenticeship);
– You’re keen to continue learning;
– You’re serious about finding out if your electrical career underway.
RTO admission requirements
Applicants are required to attend a pre-training review. This review will cover:
- Completion of a language, literacy & numeracy (LLN) assessment to confirm an applicant meets the required skill levels for training
- Confirmation that an applicant can use a computer/laptop and the internet
- Completion of a separate maths aptitude test that will be used to inform them of any additional learning they may need to complete if they wish to progress to UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician.

Upon successful completion and if you have found employment as an electrical apprentice, you may choose to complete the UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician.
NECA Electro-start course fees are $750.
